Interstate traffic is being diverted before the Old Agency Road exit in Ridgeland as emergency responders are working to clear a waste removal vehicle whose brakes malfunctioned and caught fire on I-55.

According to an MDOT social media post, the vehicle fire is located in the Northbound roadway at the Old Agency Road West Exit 105C.

Lt. Tony Wilridge with the Ridgeland Police Department said they received the call at 12:21 p.m. that a trash truck had caught fire on the interstate. He said he was not sure if it was a Waste Management or VFI truck.

“It has been well over an hour,” Wilridge said.

Wilridge said that they are working to get traffic off the interstate before Old Agency Road to keep traffic moving.

He said that he did not have a target time for the roadway to be cleared, but noted that the truck driver was working to change the brakes so that he could move it from the roadway.
