RIDGELAND — A man who allegedly robbed two local liquor stores is behind bars after he was identified by a person who had seen media reports showing photos and videos of the suspect.

Ridgeland Police received a tip that led them to Eric Stapleton, 50, of 6188 Henderson Road in Brandon.

“As a result of the cooperation from our media and press contacts,” Myers said. “We were able to identify (Stapleton) as the burglary suspect from the liquor store burglaries in Ridgeland.”

U.S. Marshals apprehended Stapleton around 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Jackson at the Star Hotel near the Medgar Evers Boulevard exit off of I-220.

Stapleton has been charged with two counts of burglary of a commercial building.

The liquor stores he robbed are Old Canton Wine and Liquor at 6592 Old Canton Road and Lake Harbour Package Store at 1075 Lake Harbour Drive.

The break-ins occurred on Sept. 8 and Sept. 17.

The suspect used a crowbar to break the lock on a metal door. Myers circulated stills taken from security cameras at the two locations.

He had previously sent out a release following the first burglary at Old Canton Wine and Liquor on September 8. The suspect is seen in the video ripping the cash register from the counter.

Myers said that Stapleton faces charges in other jurisdictions, though no holds have been put on him yet.
